This lot comes from 500 smallholder farmers who deliver their cherry to the Hadeso washing station near Shikisso, in Ethiopia's Guji Zone. Guji became its own administrative zone in 2002, when the highland districts of the neighboring Borena Zone were split off to form it. The zone takes its name from the Guji, a branch of the Oromo people who have farmed coffee on this land for generations.

For years, coffees from Guji were sold under the broader Sidamo and Yirgacheffe names. Today they're widely recognized as distinct from both, thanks to unique local varieties and microclimates.

Farming methods in Guji remain largely traditional. Guji farmers typically intercrop their coffee plants with other food crops. This method is common among smallholders because it maximizes land use and provides food for their families.

In addition to remaining traditionally intercropped, most farms are also organic by default. Farmers in Guji typically use few, if any, fertilizers or pesticides. Most farm work is done by hand, and very few tasks are mechanized, even during processing.
