Being one of the smallest producing countries in Central America (roughly the size of NJ), El Salvador’s coffee has featured prominently in the country’s history since the mid-1700s. Originally planted for domestic consumption, coffee moved to the forefront when synthetic dyes threatened the viability of indigo exports in the 1800s.

With this prominence came incentivization through government programs covering land, taxes, and military-exemption for those involved in cultivation. The unfortunate downstream effect here was a small network of landowners monopolizing and wielding a degree of control over markets.

Fast forwarding to the 1970s, coffee comprised 50% of GDP, but change was on the way. Civil war broke out for over a decade; the resultant agrarian reform changed the paradigm around the industry as it had existed and this period of instability led to a rapid erosion of trust in the market as well as the programs that had previously supported estates and smallholders alike.
Coffee languished in the background of the conflict until the 1990s when a peace agreement was reached.

Some folks laud the arrival of Cup of Excellence in 2003 as one of the events that helped usher in the new wave of interest in Salvadoran coffee.
